One strategy that nations use to come to some agreement on issues is
Treaties.
One well known, and effective treaty, is the
Antarctic Treaty.
Another of course is The Treaty of Waitangi.
Individually, or in pairs, students develop a treaty designed to manage
access to a resource of their choice, eg.
- whales
- forests
- minerals such as oil, gold and bauxite
- genes
- water
- food
Managing access to the resource will mean ensuring that:
- people who need to have access to the resource have it;
- the resource is not over used and exhausted - that it is used sustainably;
- decisions made about managing access to the resource are enforcable.
Students prepare a treaty and present it to the class. Display the finished
treaties around the room.
The treaty will contain at least five clauses outlining:
- Who is to have access to the resource;
- How much access they will have;
- What will be done to ensure that the treaty is observed.
The treaty should follow the conventions of a treaty - title, preamble,
clauses, formal language, signatories. Features like fancy fonts, scrolls,
etc. are optional!
