Each student designs an individual flag to record their progress on
the learning route of the Hillary Challenge. As they complete each section
of learning tasks they can move their flag to the next camp on their path
to the summit.
- Look at flags of the
world
- Look closely at the flags of New Zealand and Nepal:
- Talk about the use of symbols and colours on flags
to represent people's ideas, cultures, history...
- Complete a colour connotations chart.
- Brainstorm ideas for representing themselves.
What colours and why?
What symbols and why?
- Make a draft design of their flag.
Think about the shape.
Think about layout, background, foreground.
The flags will need to be quite small to all fit on the class route map.
Use paper and thin felt pens or colouring pencils.
Do not name them, let them be identified by their design, just
like authentic flags!
