Inquiry Process:

- making valid generalisations based on evidence
Social Studies Concepts:
- perseverance
- facing the unknown
- team spirit
TASKS:
Consider:
- how Sir Edmund Hillary felt as one of the selected two to attempt the climb to the summit
- what skills and qualities were needed to survive at this stage of the ascent
- how it felt to be in a place where no one had ever been before
- the part played by all the team members in the venture
Quote from Sir Edmund Hillary
"On re-reading my diary of 20 years ..
I get the impression that I must have been a rather uncomfortable person at times on the expedition - restless, competitive and a little argumentative. Yet my memories of the expedition have revolved about the good times, about the people I liked and laughed with, the tough jobs we did together and the feeling that everyone was giving of their best."
Try these two 'higher order thinking' tasks before the team try and make it to the summit.
Select from these activities to explore the skills, qualities and values that contributed to the triumphs and achievements of the greatest living New Zealander on their way to the summit of Mt. Everest.
- Use the relevant information that has been gathered and processed to make summary statements about:
- the skills and knowledge Sir Edmund Hillary needed to use and develop to be successful in achieving his goals
- some qualities that leaders need and the ways people can become leaders
Teams talk together about the main ideas and jot down key points to be included, then word it into one or two sentences. Then they recraft it until everyone in the team is happy with it. Make sure the statements are supported by the evidence collected and recorded. Now teams write the statement in one or two sentences that include the key points and ideas.
- Teams write generalisations in one or two sentences at the end of the chart to complete them.. .
