Inquiry process:
processing information and communicating findings
Social Studies concepts:
- utilising resources
- confidence
- success
Learning Outcomes:
- describe challenges encountered by the team during their ascent.
- identify a range of tools and strategies people used to organise themselves in response to challenges and crises during the ascent of Mt. Everest
- identify ways that planning and organisation helped Sir Edmund Hillary and other team members meet the challenges encountered in the ascent of Mt. Everest.
- describe the ways Sir Edmund Hillary has applied his skills and qualities in responding to challenge, after the ascent.
TASK:
The team is now ready for the final push to the summit.
After exploring the ideas in the final text of Focus 10 consider :
- how you might try and replicate that sense of achievement experienced by Sir Edmund Hillary
with each individual member of the class so that all individuals experience the feeling of success and recognition.
- how the class might plan to celebrate their own achievements in learning and those of Sir Edmund Hillary and his team
- how their knowledge base and skills can be built on and used across a range of areas.
- are we born good organisers or are we made?
- how each class member can be given an opportunity to learn and demonstrate their skills and achievements in some area just as Sir Edmund Hillary was given the opportunity.
- how their successes, new knowledge and skills might be shared with others in the school and in the community
Take a photo, shake hands , give a hug, celebrate your achievement, look forward to new challenges and enjoy your future successes- but don't forget to plan and prepare!
Select from these activities to explore the skills, qualities and values that contributed to the triumphs and achievements of the greatest living New Zealander, and could be useful in communicating findings to a wider audience. Consider how Sir Edmund Hillary has utilised his skills and knowledge gained from his successful ascent of Mt. Everest.
