Inquiry process:
making a generalisation supported by evidence and communicating the information.

Social Studies concepts:

  • preparation-key to survival.

    TASKS:
Consider using these questions to visually depict the keys to survival at this stage of the ascent.

    • What preparation needs to be done at this stage to increase the chances of survival?
    • What impacts are the conditions having on the team members?
    • What illustrates the inner strength required at this stage by team members?
    • What roles and responsibilities do the Sherpa members of the team play in the planning of the ascent?

    1. Time to gather strength, reflect and use skills and knowledge in a summary statement
Teams of students use the information recorded to make a summary statement about the organisation (planning and preparation) that that has been needed to be implemented at different stages of their ascent of Mt Everest. Students talk together about their ideas, jotting down the key points they want included, then drafting these into one or two sentences. Recraft until all of the team members are happy with it. Make sure the statements are supported by the evidence they have collected and recorded through their charts, timelines etc.. Write their final statement in one or two sentences that include the key points and ideas on the Thinking Deep Chart.

    2. Make a generalisation
Use the ideas in their summary statement about the different ways Sir Edmund Hillary and the team members organised themselves in response to challenge and crisis to extend their thinking to a wider group of people and a wider range of events in society. How might these ideas apply to the way people plan and prepare for other significant physical and mental challenges ? What can they now say about the different ways people organise themselves in response to challenge and crisis?? What role did "being prepared" play in Sir Edmund Hillary's achievements?Ensure that the generalisation includes how challenges are planned and prepared for and why they need to be. They write the generalisation in one or two sentences on the Thinking Deep Chart.
