Inquiry process: making generalisations supported by evidence
Social Studies concepts:
- team effort
- the unknown
- success
TASK:
Consider:
- what being where no one has ever been before might be like
- Sir Edmund Hillary's dreams might have been on that last night before the summit attempt
- what resources were used and for what purpose
- the part team effort played in the processes
Make a summary statement
Students use the information recorded to
make 2 summary statements about the significance
of Mt. Everest to Sir Edmund Hillary and the significance of his successful ascent on New Zealanders then and now. Students talk
together about their ideas, jotting down the key points they
want included, then record these in draft in one or two
sentences. Recraft until all of the team members are happy with it. Make
sure the statements are supported by the evidence they
have collected, recorded and compared. Write their final statement in one or two
sentences that include the key points and ideas on the Thinking Deep
Chart.
