  • Select from these mapping and location activities

    Off on the Hillary Challenge...

    First stop: Kathmandu
    How will they get there?
    What route will they take?
What reasons could they have for going there today?

    Getting the big picture
Locate Nepal and Asia on the National Geographic interactive map or use classroom atlases.

    Zooming in

    Individual blank map outlines
On a world map outline or a class size world map, locate and label New Zealand, India, Nepal, Tibet, China, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Himalayas, Mt Everest and any other places that arise during the study.

On an outline map of Asia label India, Nepal, Tibet, China, Bhutan, Bangladseh, Kathmandu, Himalayas and Mt Everest.

  • Picture puzzles

Select six to eight pictures of the Kathmandu area. Cut each into four or pieces. If some of the pictures are the same cut them different ways, if they are all different then cut them all the same. Give each student a puzzle piece. They then try to complete the picture by finding the students who have the other puzzle parts of the picture.

Now in this group look closely at the picture and do a Two Ps and a WC Activity (below).

  • Two P's and a WC

Prepare these sets of cards for each group (laminate these so they can be used in other studies). Each picture group glues their picture onto a piece of card and finds a place to work in the classroom. Hand out the cards randomly, one for each student in the group, who follows the instructions. After one complete round, change cards and repeat the process, until all students have had several turns. If you have used different pictures you could regroup after swapping cards each time as well, eg. all the students who now have a wonder card move clockwise, and those with a Puzzle card move anti clockwise to another group.
