  • In 2002, the overseas born accounted for 34 % of Auckland's resident population, compared to 20% of NZ as a whole
  • The majority of NZ's resident Asian population , 66.1%, was born in Asia, while 22.5% were born in NZ.
  • In 2001, 23% of Asian population had a bachelors degree or higher qualification, almost double the equivalent for the total NZ population
  • In June 2002 year, migrants had a net positive fiscal impact of $1.7 billion (BERL)
  • The average net impact of each migrant aged 18-64 was $3240 compared to $2980 for NZ-born residents (BERL).
  • New Zealand earned $1.7 billion from more than 80 000 foreign fee-paying students in 2002 - making education the country's fourth largest export-earner.
