Organise the class into groups of 3 - 5 students. Each group will act as Borany's family as it was in Battambang, ie. Borany, her Mother, Ramany, and her future stepfather.

Each family group has to decide its future - will they stay in Battambang, return to Phnom Penh or attempt to cross the border into Thailand. They must consider each option in turn and discuss the likely consequences of each move (or non-move) on the family and on the places.

They may choose to use a Problem-Solving Chart (below) to organise their ideas.

(Note: this is a simple decision making activity, not a Social Decision Making activity.)

Living in Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge have been defeated.
Problem: What should the family do? Stay in Battambang; move to Phnom Penh; cross the border into Thailand; other?

Each group presents their decision to the class as a whole.

The presentation will include:

  • An explanation of why they chose to move or stay;
  • An outline of possible consequences for the family;
  • An outline of the implications for the place if they and numerous other Cambodians stay at or arrive in that place.
