This activity helps students organise their knowledge in preparation for
Achievement Standard 1.1 Examine Change in Society (externally assessed).
Working individually or in groups students:
- Identify social changes that have taken place in countries that have
been, and still are, affected by landmines, eg.
- work (role of men and woman, types of work);
- population structure (age groups, gender balance);
- education (levels, availability);
- status (wealth, role in the community);
- access to resources (food, medical services);
- morale (confidence, fear, hope, hopelessness);
- social structure.
- Discuss reasons for these changes.
Consider for example the impact on society of:
- The roles that landmine victims play in society before and after their
injuries;
- Ongoing costs of disability for individuals, communities, society;
- Families without income earners;
- Loss of wealth - livestock, land;
- Damage to transport and communication infrastructures;
- Economic factors such as the cost of demining;
- Communities living in a climate of fear;
- People made landless and homeless (refugees);
- Reduced access to health, education and other services;
- Discuss likely effects of changes on people.
- Students summarise their findings using a
T Chart: Landmines and Social
Change.
