Note: This activity may be used as a formative assessment task for Achievement
Standard 1.3 Conduct a Social Studies Inquiry.
Students choose one Case Study as the focus for their Inquiry,
eg. Cambodia, Angola, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Iraq, Sudan,
Afghanistan, Somalia, Chechnya, Vietnam or any of the other nations
subjected to landmines.
Provide each student with a copy of the Inquiry Template and, if
appropriate, to Inquiry Steps - how to conduct a Social Studies Inquiry.
Focus: How changes in (Case Study) brought about by landmines have affected
people and the environment.
Students will communicate their findings as a news magazine article with at
least three relevant visuals.
Appropriate Conventions
for a news magazine article could include:
snappy headline, introductory paragraph; series of paragraphs logically
linked; key sentences with supporting evidence; relevant visuals with
captions; proof-read for spelling and grammar; concluding paragraph.
