If this is the first marae visit you have organised you will need to work closely with your local Maori community or seek advice from them throughout the process. Marae protocol varies from place to place. Some information on this site may not apply on your marae.

Contacting a local marae: Marae Directory.

  • Arrange dates and time and explain the purpose of the visit.
  • Ask about koha (gift) custom, find out how much is suitable.
  • Discuss number of speakers (one is usually enough when children are involved).
  • To plan interaction with Marae hosts, eg. food, help and assistance in kitchens.
