It is important that students are clear about the meaning of key terms that they will
encounter in this unit. A First and Second Definitions Chart is a useful tool for
identifying students' understanding and ensuring that they do have clear definitions of
significant terms.
- Students draw up a T Chart like the one below.
- On an OHT or on the board provide a list of key terms for this unit. A possible
selection is given below.
| Terms | First definition | Second definition |
| culture | | |
| adapt | | |
| change | | |
| society | | |
| beliefs | | |
| ideas | | |
| Multicultural | | |
| Bicultural | | |
| Gender | | |
| Social change | | |
| Cultural change | | |
| Socio-economic | | |
- Students quietly, on their own without discussing with others, attempt their definition
of each term in the first definition column. They do not attempt to write
anything in the last column at this point.
- Collect the definitions (not mark or correct them) or discuss them as a
class. The idea is to gain an insight into the students' existing knowledge
about a topic and identify clear gaps or misunderstandings.
- Either before starting the unit proper, or as the terms
are encountered in the course of the unit, students complete the second
definitions column.
