TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Select and adapt these learning activities to best meet the needs of your
students, and to fit the time available:
- Starter: Melting Pot
Play the song Melting Pot by When the Cat's Away. Listen to it twice.
During the second listening students jot down what they think the key ideas
the song is addressing are. Discuss these.
- What do we mean by... ?
culture, adapt, change, society, beliefs, ideas, multicultural, bicultural, gender,
socio-economic, social change, cultural change.
First and Second Definitions
- 'The way we do things around here'
In groups of 3-4 students brainstorm 'culture'.
- What do they perceive culture to be about?
- Groups categorize the brainstorming into key concepts.
- Design a question for each category, eg. celebrations: 'What do people
celebrate?'.
- Develop a group mind
map to show different aspects of a culture. (Colour to depict
aspects peculiar to specific cultures within the group.)
- How to Conduct an Inquiry
In pairs write up a Flow Chart to revise the steps
in a Social Studies Inquiry.
- Case Study - Culturegram
Note: This activity provides an ideal opportunity for formative assessment
of the Level 1 NCEA
Inquiry achievement standard 1.3.
- Who am I?
After completing their Inquiry, students choose key information about their
culture from their Culturegram and prepare a
jigsaw that summarises this key
information.
- There to Here; Then and Now
Each student chooses one aspect of their culture from their culturegram (eg.
food, family groups, celebrations...) to analyse.
- Reasons for Change
In pairs or small groups (from the same cultural group if possible)
examine why cultures change.
- Effects on People
Consider the possible effects that cultural change might mean for you
personally. Take some time to

Interview a person from your culture from an older generation.
