Until the 19th Century, humans had never been to Antarctica. When early explorers arrived they were not concerned about how they treated the land. When they left Antarctica to go back to their homelands they left behind rubbish, used equipment (e.g. sleds), abandoned buildings, dead animals, human waste etc. Because Antarctica is like a huge freezer, dead animals remained preserved and waste did not break down as it might do in other parts of the world.

Today scientists and explorers are more concerned about what happens to Antarctica. They want to protect its environment.

So how is waste managed in Antarctica?

Choose 4 types of waste you think that there would be in Antarctica. For each type of waste, describe how you think is the best way to dispose of it.
