You have come up with ways to dispose of waste in Antarctica. Compare your answers with what actually happens:

There are four main ways of controlling waste in Antarctica.

Reduce
Those working in Antarctica try to make less rubbish to start with. Many items these days come with a great deal of packaging. People going to Antarctica try to minimise the packaging that they take with them. They only take down (or send down) what is necessary.

Reuse
In Antarctica they try to extend the life of products instead of throwing everything away. Everything that can be reused is reused.

Recycle
Making new products out of material that would otherwise be thrown away. Recyclable items are stored where they can't be blown away. They are then shipped back to the home country of the base (eg. Scott Base send their stuff back to New Zealand. McMurdo Station send theirs to the USA).

Dispose
In some cases, waste water and sewage must be disposed. Sewage is treated then released into the water surrounding Antarctica. Some waste is burnt off in high temperature incinerators. Only ash then remains from this waste. The ash is shipped back to the home country of the base.
