Level 2: How people's activities influence places like Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill and its surrounding area. How people's use of the cone has been influenced by features of the volcanic cone itself.

Learning Outcomes:
Students will:
Suggest how the shape and features of a volcanic cone like Maungakiekie might influence what people do on and around it. Examine the effects of people's activities on Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill and its surrounding area.

Suggested Activities
Before taking the Virtual Field Trip brainstorm all the things that people use Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill-Cornwall Park for. Refer to the Level 1 Virtual Field Trip for ideas.

What might Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill have looked like when it erupted 20 000 years ago?
Investigate how volcanic cones like Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill were formed then discuss the likely features of a new volcano, eg. shape, number of craters, colour, materials (rock and ash), size.

Individually or in pairs students draw Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill as it might have looked 20 000 years ago. They will need to sketch two outlines of their volcano. Leave one outline sketch blank in the meantime. On the other outline draw on, colour in and label the features of the new-born volcano. Annotate the sketch to with ideas about how the shape and features (e.g. number of craters, rocks) of a volcanic cone like Maungakiekie might affect what people do on and around it.

Alternatively - create papiermache models of volcanic cones.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) has a superb circular poster called Volcano Mangere Mountain with a drawing by Chris Gaskin of what a newly erupting volcano could have looked like. Contact DOC's Auckland Conservancy for copies.

During the Virtual Field Trip fill in the blank PMI Chart.

After the Virtual Field Trip take the blank outline sketch of Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill and draw on some of the activities that Maori would have taken part in on the volcanic cone. (The Stonefields poster from the ARC would be very helpful.)
Next, draw on all the activities that take place in and around Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill today. Construct a consequences wheel to show the affect each of these activities has on Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill and Cornwall Park.

Assessment
In groups the children select three activities and complete a PMI Chart to examine the effects of people's activities on Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill.
