Draw up 10 boxes down the margin (about 5 lines long) and complete the
dictated drawing using the statements about the Dalmatians below. The
teacher reads out each statement and the student draws the first thing that
comes to mind. After all the drawings are completed, the student goes back
to each drawing and writes down a description for each picture.

Statements about the Dalmatians for the Dictated Drawing:
- In the 1870's there were few jobs in Dalmatia.
- The Austrian Empire ruled Dalmatia and the Dalmatians often did not like
their laws.
- Dalmatia was overpopulated. There was a lot of space in New Zealand.
- Between 1980 and 1964 over 10,000 Dalmatians immigrated to New Zealand.
- Most of the Dalmatians settled in Northland, as the climate was similar to
home.
- They worked on Kauri Gum fields digging in the ground for Kauri Gum to be
used to make varnish.
- The Dalmatians were very hard workers
- Dalmatians faced prejudice in New Zealand because they spoke very little
English, could stretch out their money to last and had never dug for Kauri
Gum before.
- Laws were passed in New Zealand to make it difficult for Dalmatians to dig
for Kauri Gum.
- Today many Dalmatian families in New Zealand have been here for a very
long time. Many of them work in the wine industry, restaurants, orchards
etc.
