This unit addresses the part of the achievement objective which examines one system of government - democracy. To fully address this achievement objective, you will need to examine another system of government elsewhere, in the past or present. Who's the Boss online unit does this by comparing the democratic government in New Zealand with a dictatorship - ie, that in Cambodia during the rule of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. You may wish to use this Virtual Field Trip to enhance the New Zealand component of Who's the Boss.

This Virtual Field Trip is intended to support and enhance your teaching of a unit on people's participation in central government in New Zealand. It uses online links to support the understanding of Parliament and our system of government. It is in no way intended to replace an authentic field trip to Parliament, which can be arranged by contacting the Education Officer, Veronica Allum on veronica.allum@parliament.govt.nz Fax 04 472 8206

Virtual Field Trips are a dynamic way in which the WWW is enhancing learning in the classroom. Read these Virtual Field Trip guidelines to see how you can cement a Virtual Field Trip into your unit planning and make it an authentic learning experience. The list of "does" and "don'ts" are a very practical set of guidelines which show the importance of the teacher in guiding and facilitating the online experience to gain maximum advantage as a learning experience. Surfaquarium has amazing Virtual Field trips to interesting geographic sites around the world.

The "Find Out More" questions are easily accessible from the web links provided earlier in each stop, or in the "Find Out More" sections. You may wish to extend your students further in this section by further web searches using Google or by using print resources.

A downloadable clipboard is provided for recording information for the "Record" questions. The "Find Out More" questions will need to be recorded in students' workbooks. You will need to select the stops that you want students to undertake more research on, depending on the time you have available and the needs of your students.

To access the audio links in Stop 6 you will need to install RealOne Player. This requires Windows 98 or better.
