Link Central South Island
A beautifully presented site covering towns in the Central South Island (Timaru, Pleasant Point, Temuka, Geraldine, Waimate) plus the Peel Forest and Aoraki Mt Cook. Take the time to dig through layers and you will find some fascinating information about this scenic region.

Link Earthbeat
This an Australian (ABC) science site with a particularly good section on environmental matters. It uses links with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's current news and provides a wealth of information. It has an Australian focus, but translates to global issues well.

Link Encyclopedia of sustainable development
A good starting point for an environmental theme. It provides links to various other websites as well and covers topics such as economy and society as well as a social action 'doing our bit' section.

Link EPA Explorers Club
These pages from the Environmental Protection Agency provide children with lessons and activities in a variety of areas where they can help clean-up and protect the environment.

Link Immigration Workshop
A site specifically aimed at the Level 5 Place and Environment achievement objective. Based around investigations (activities).

Link Rainforest Live
This site has loads of teaching ideas, lesson plans and a kidz section with fun, interactive ideas for learning about the rainforest. For example, you can look up causes for the destruction of the Rainforest and find relevant, up-to-date information in sub-sections such as farming, logging and roads.

Numerous links to environmental sites. Includes scenarios for planning and decision making within environmental contexts.

Link Volcano World
A site for dedicated volcano watchers. Resources, projects, practical activities, quizzes. Tends to have a science bias and Social Studies teachers will need to add in the people focus.

Link The Volcanoes of Auckland
Set up by the ARC (Auckland Regional Council) as part of their GIS in Schools project, this site targets volcanoes as natural hazards but also provides valuable background information. e.g. Maori use of the volcanic cones.

Link Worldwatch Institute
An organisation devoted to fostering the evolution of an environmentally sustainable society according to its mission statement. A comprehensive selection of news releases is free but its magazine is subscription based.
