Where...

  1. Is Italy?
On an outline map of the world, locate and label the country of Italy then locate and label the country that you live in. Don't forget to give this map a title, scale, orientation (north point) and key (if appropriate). Onto the outline map draw a straight line from the country you live in to Italy and work out the distance you will travel to get from your country to Italy (hint: you will need to use the scale to do this).

    1. How many countries did you have to cross to get to Italy?

    2. Name the oceans and seas you crossed on your journey to Italy.

    3. What general compass direction did you have to travel to get to Italy?

    4. Approximately how many times bigger or smaller is Italy compared to the country that you live in?

  2. Is Rome?
It will help to know where in Italy we will be visiting during our short visit, so on an outline map of Italy locate and label the Cities of Rome (Roma) and Pompeii. These are two places that tourists find significant. Include the main mountains, rivers and seas of Italy on your map. Don't forget to give your map a title, scale, orientation (north point) and key (if appropriate).

    1. Write a general description of the physical landscape of Italy. Your description should give you and your teacher an idea of what the landscape like (is it hilly? Is it mountainous? Does it have lots of rivers and plains? Is it mostly flat?).

    2. How does the landscape of Italy compare to the landscape in your country? Write a brief comparison.

  3. Was the Roman Empire?
The Ancient Romans controlled a vast area of Europe by the time their Empire was at its peak in around 120AD. Construct an accurate map of the area controlled by ancient Rome.

    1. How many separate provinces had been under the control of Rome by 120AD?

    2. What was the name of the most northern province held by Rome? (8 on the map)

    3. What was the name of the most southern province held by Rome? (49 on the map)

    4. What is the name given to that province today?

    5. State the name given to Italy in 120AD.
