TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Starters

  1. Take a Trip
    Either: Take an actual trip to McDonalds or Burger King or Wendy's or any other fast food outlet;
Or: Take a virtual trip to one of these places.

Students create two illustrated Flow Charts, one showing the steps in the process of making the meal, the other showing the steps in the process of being a consumer (from deciding to go to the fast food restaurant to joining the queue to disposing of the rubbish).

  2. History of McDonalds
How did McDonalds and the McDonalds' way of making hamburgers come about? Students create a simple History Road, using Golden Arches as signposts, highlighting ten key events in the history of McDonalds. A very detailed history of McDonalds can be found on McSpotlight.

  3. Investigate
What role do McDonaldised organisations play in our lives? Students conduct a People Hunt to find out.

George Ritzer and the McDonaldisation of Society

  1. What is McDonaldisation?
    And who is George Ritzer?

George Ritzer is a professor of sociology. He put forward the thesis or idea that the process of running fast food restaurants (like McDonalds) has been adopted by many other organisations (eg. Burger King, Wendys, Pizza Hut, Sizzlers, Body Shop, Midas Mufflers, H&R Block, Kindercare, Jenny Craigs, Disney, McDoctors, McDentists, McSpectacles), not just in the fast food industry. He calls this process the McDonaldisation of Society. Societies in many parts of the world have changed or are changing as a result.

    Defining McDonaldisation
Students complete Definition Maps, match up Key Terms and Descriptors, and write Acrostic Poems.

  2. Perception Check: Jigsaw
Students create a large wall Jigsaw summarising the key ideas of McDonaldisation.

  3. Crossword
    Test yourself.

  4. Being McDonaldised
What are the attributes of a McDonaldised business? Students create a Business Card for a McDonaldised business.

  5. McDonaldisation at Your Place
Students investigate the spread of McDonaldisation in their local community.

  6. Pros and Cons
What are the benefits and disadvantages of McDonaldisation for the companies, the consumers and the workers? Students complete a PMI or use de Bono's Six Thinking Hats to analyse some different points of view about McDonaldisation.

  7. How has McDonaldisation affected people's work opportunities and conditions?
McJobs and the McDonaldisation of the workplace.

  8. How has McDonaldisation Changed Society?
Students conduct a Social Studies Inquiry.

  9. Values Exploration
    Summative Assessment Task
A moderated assessment task will be available on Te Kete Ipurangi after 23rd June.

  10. Social Decision Making
Wrap Up by planning social action.
