This could be used as a formative assessment opportunity for Achievement Standard 1.5: Decide on social action in relation to a social issue.
The
Waitakere City Council
is quoted as wanting McDonalds to pay for part of the $600,000 annual bill, for
cleaning up litter in the city.
McSpotlight, the web site set up to support the
McLibel Two
in the now famous libel case,
identifies a number of
issues
associated with McDonalds, and McDonaldised companies.
Individually or in small groups students complete the
Social Decision Making
Template to:
- Identify one social issue related to McDonaldisation.
- Briefly outline the issue.
- Describe four possible actions that people could take to deal with the
issue.
- Outline likely consequences of each action.
Use Social Studies concepts in your answer.
- Identify your preferred action.
- Justify your choice with supporting evidence.
The Assessment Criteria for this Achievement Standard:
Credit
- State possible social actions (two is enough) in relation to a social
issue and identify their likely consequences.
- Identify, with reason(s), the preferred action(s).
Merit
- State a range (three) of possible social actions in relation to a social
issue and identify their likely consequences.
- Identify the preferred action(s) and justify with reasoned argument (using
supporting evidence).
Excellence
- State a wide range (four) of possible social actions in relation to a
social issue and outline, in depth (using Social Studies concepts), their
likely consequences.
- Identify the preferred action(s) and justify with reasoned argument (using
supporting evidence).
