Perception Check
The idea that landforms such as mountains, and geologic activity (vulcanism)
result from the actions of supernatural forces is almost universal. Many
cultures have legends
that tell of the formation of volcanoes.
- Students chose one volcano legend to investigate (individually or in
pairs). They then rewrite the legend as a Geologist might explain it today -
in no more than 66 words.
- In small groups, or as a class, discuss how people today view the idea
that volcanoes are the result of supernatural forces.
- How might people a hundred years in the future view the current theories
on plate tectonics and the formation of volcanoes?
Extension Activity - for Fast Finishers
Find some old Geography textbooks (probably hidden away at the back of the
bottom shelf of your Resource Room) from 20-30 years ago - before
Continental Drift became widely accepted.
How did geologists explain volcanic activity in pre Continental Drift Theory
times?
