The idea of a brainstorm is to get the brain humming and generate ideas about a topic by jotting down on a large sheet of paper words and phrases that come to mind. Tell students to "Write everything they know about the topic." Let their minds roam. Allow creative thinking. Stress that there are no wrong answers in a brainstorm. If brainstorming in a group, there can be a leader to encourage participation by each member of the group and try to keep the ideas focussed on the topic.
