If possible, take laminated copies of the
Stonefields
poster up on to the mountain
with you.
Get the students to sit or stand in groups along one of the ridges overlooking
the Manukau harbour, or facing south towards the Otuataua
stonefields or Matukutureia (McLaughlins Mountain - the volcanic cone
that has been quarried away until it looks like a step pyramid). Provide each
group with access to a Stonefields poster.
Ask the students to imagine that they are standing on the pa in the
background of the poster.
- What might you have seen? smelt? heard?
- What structures/buildings would be around you?
- What resources would you have had access to? How would you have gathered
them?
- In times of war/threat how would you have been feeling? what would you have
been thinking? what preparations would you have made?
Ask them to record their responses - verbally or pictorially.
