Equipment needed:
Pencil (not pen or felt tip, but don't get too hung up about it);
exercise book or paper supported by a clipboard or similar firm base.
Select a suitable vantage point that allows the students to not only view
the features that they are going to sketch, but also allows them to sit or
kneel comfortably while they draw.
Teach students how to make a frame using their hands (eg. right hand held
out in front of them, palm facing and thumb up and left hand held above the
right hand, back of the hand facing and thumb down).
This is the field of view that they are going to sketch.
Construct a frame for the sketch. Divide the frame into thirds.
Note: This could be done in class before venturing out into the field.
Lightly pencil in the background or horizon. Then add features in the middle
ground and the foreground.
The drawing order will vary from sketch to sketch. Sometimes it may be
easier to start with features in the middle third.
Label (annotate) each feature on the sketch.
Note the location from which the sketch was made and if possible note the
direction that you are facing.
Give the sketch a working title.
