In the Mound Garden at Otuataua Stonefields
This was a garden where Maori gardeners cleared the stones from the volcanic
soil and used them to create mounds and low walls.
The mounds used the stones' heat absorbing properties to help warm the
earth, and retain moisture. Some mounds have been found to conatin added
organic material and ground up shell. They acted like mini hot houses.
This material has been produced by UNITEC Institute of Technology
under contract to the Ministry of Education.
