"The predominant visual experience of the Otuataua Stonefields is the rough, rocky terrain of the lava fields that cover most of the 100ha of the Historic Reserve. ...The lava fields were formed by the eruptions of two small volcanoes in the Reserve (Otuataua and Puketapapa). The lava flows and ash deposits from the eruptions created an uneven landscape with deep gullies and thin ridges... Outcrops, boulders and loose rock cover the fields. There are also several caves, which lead down into empty lava tubes."
