What Did You Do in the War, Grandma?

This assessment has THREE parts, all of which must be completed to demonstrate understanding of the Achievement Objective: How and why people experience events in different ways.

Part 1: Questionnaire

  • Design a questionnaire that contains at least TEN open and closed questions to find out about the experiences of ONE woman in our local community during World War II.

Part 2: Collection and Presentation

  • Collect and record a variety of information from Primary and Secondary sources about the experiences of New Zealand women in wartime.

  • Present your information on the Research Summary Sheet.

  • Write up the answers to your questionnaire in the form of an Oral History Report. It should have a title, introduction, be set out in paragraphs and have a conclusion. Go back to the War Stories Web site to give you some ideas.

  • The findings of the class will be presented in the form of a Booklet for the Library. It will be titled: What did you do in the war Grandma?

    Set it out as follows:

    • Title: Appropriate for the woman that you interviewed. Have a conference with your teacher.
    • Type on one side of the page only
    • justified alignment
    • 1.5 line spacing.

You will be given time in class to word process your war story.

  • In 2-3 sentences describe the experiences of the woman you interviewed and attach it to our class collage: New Zealand Women In Wartime.

Part 3: Synthesis and Evaluation

  • Use the summaries of class members to write a generalisation that explains the different experiences of New Zealand women in wartime.

  • Evaluate your findings by completing the evaluation sheet.
