Land use by the early Maori settlers

You are to investigate one way in which the environment was used by early Maori settlers and how this activity affected the land. You will create one page for a class display.

You will need to discuss the importance of the activity to early Maori society as well as the legacy this activity has left for us today. Think about the different ways this activity affected the environment. Consider whether these resources are still abundant today and why or why not. How have archaeologists and historians found out about this activity? Discuss the evidence that they have found which informs us about this activity.

You may choose to study one of the following areas; pa (defence), forests, agriculture, fishing, greenstone, flax. If you wish to choose another topic check this with your teacher before starting.

Your page for the display will need:

  • a title
  • to be eye catching
  • an introduction - you will need to explain what the activity is
  • an explanation of why the activity was important for early Maori settlers
  • a description of any short term and long term effects of this activity
  • to discuss the evidence - how we know this activity has taken place (think about the effect of this activity on land formations and archaeological evidence found)
  • to include accurate information
  • to list a range of sources which you have used

When you have completed your page for the display you will need to evaluate your work on the self-evaluation sheet.
