1964After pressure from United States Holyoake announces that a non-combat engineering unit would be sent to Vietnam.
Civilian Surgical team arrive and based at Qui Nhon.
1965The United States Special Ambassador visits New Zealand and in May the first major public anti-war protests begin. Holyoake announces troops to be sent. 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery, departs for Vietnam. First New Zealanders killed in action.
1966United States Vice President Hubert Humphrey visits and New Zealand increases the size of 161 battery.
United States President visits New Zealand in October.
1967Victor One Rifle company arrives in Nui Dat in May. New Zealand Combined Services Medical Team sent to Bong Sonin July. RNZAF airforce pilots begin work with an Australian Airforce helicopter squadron.
Whisky One Rifle company sent to Nui Dat in December.
1968Special Air Services ( SAS) unit sent to Vietnam. Peace, Power and Politics anit-war conference in Wellington, at the same time as a SEATO Council of Minister’s Meeting. United States Secretary of State holds secret talks with Cabinet.
1970United States Vice President Spiro Agnew visits New Zealand in January. Violent confrontation between demonstrators and police outside his hotel. Whisky Company is withdrawn in November.
1971First New Zealand Army Training Team to train Vietnamese soldiers sent to Vietnam in January. ‘Mobilisation in June’ protest marches. Last New Zealand combat units withdrawn in December .
1972Second Army Training Team sent in March. Labour wins election and Kirk withdraws New Zealand training teams in November.
1975New Zealand embassy staff leave Saigon before communist forces take over city. Civilian surgical team leave Qui Nhon before communist forces take over the city.
