| 1965 | The United States Special Ambassador visits New Zealand and in May the first major public anti-war protests begin. Holyoake announces troops to be sent. 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery, departs for Vietnam. First New Zealanders killed in action.

| 1967 | Victor One Rifle company arrives in Nui Dat in May. New Zealand Combined Services Medical Team sent to Bong Sonin July. RNZAF airforce pilots begin work with an Australian Airforce helicopter squadron.

| 1968 | Special Air Services ( SAS) unit sent to Vietnam. Peace, Power and Politics anit-war conference in Wellington, at the same time as a SEATO Council of Minister’s Meeting. United States Secretary of State holds secret talks with Cabinet.

| 1970 | United States Vice President Spiro Agnew visits New Zealand in January. Violent confrontation between demonstrators and police outside his hotel. Whisky Company is withdrawn in November.

| 1971 | First New Zealand Army Training Team to train Vietnamese soldiers sent to Vietnam in January. ‘Mobilisation in June’ protest marches. Last New Zealand combat units withdrawn in December .

| 1972 | Second Army Training Team sent in March. Labour wins election and Kirk withdraws New Zealand training teams in November.
