"Decide on a Social Action in relation
to a Social Issue"
The class take on the role of a radio host of a local issues
programme on Tokelauan radio. This is an individual assessment
activity.
Context / Setting:
A local Tokelauan radio station has been looking at a major issue
facing Tokelauan Society. It had been said by Tokelauan elders that
:
'The biggest challenge we face is how to give our children a good education without losing them to the outside world.'
'The big challenge is how to create a future for Tokelau that young people will want to return to.'
The class take on the role of a radio host of a local issues
programme on Tokelauan radio. The programme is called 'Our
Small World'.
The issue being reported on by the radio
station is 'How does Tokelau keep its young people in Tokelau?"
The role of the host is to choose letters sent to the radio station that best describe possible action that can be taken by Tokelauan Society to
consider the points of view sent in and sum up the situation with his /her preferred
action taken from the public opinions received.
The preferred action is to be communicated to all in a 'Best
Solutions' time slot within the programme.
Conditions:
This activity is to be completed over three hours in class. All written material is to stay in the class room if three one hour slots are used.
It is expected that students will be familiar with relevant concepts
found on page 14 of the social studies curriculum document.

Task 1:
As host of the radio programme you will read out 4 letters sent to you by Tokelauan
listeners (written by you). The letters will be from different perspectives and each letter will :
- State a possible action that could be taken by Tokelauan society to keep young people in
Tokelau.
- Outline the likely short and long term consequences of the
action for Tokelauan society.
Task 2:
As the radio host you will write a 'best solution' summing up preferred action(s) from the
4 letters.
Your reasons justifying this selection will describe the short and
long term social and economic consequences of the action for the
future of Tokelauan society.
You will need to use social studies ideas and terms to describe the likely consequences of the actions published.
