Our Small World

Consider the options

Tokelauans face unique challenges because of their environment and location.  What are some options Tokelauans might have to meet the challenges?

Six quotes have been taken from the video and have an accompanying "What if?" question attached to it.
These questions are to be discussed one to a group and findings reported on to other groups.  Students will need to think around the questions - think creatively.

(Home and expert groups)
Divide the class into 6 groups - Home groups. One person in each group will become an expert on a "What if?" question and report back to the others in their home group

Divide the class into 6 new groups - Expert groups - with one person from each home group per group.  Each group is given a quote from the video and a "What if?" question. They discuss the quote and work on the "What if?" question to become 'experts' on that question. They will all need to make notes on their discussion

The class returns then to home groups and each person (expert) reports their discussion back to the others.

Quotes and "What if?" questions

'How do we give our children a good education without losing them to the outside world?'
What if we could change the way students are taught. How/ what / where?

'The ship is our only link with the outside world. It calls once a month.'
What if air transport could be introduced?

'One of the hardest things about returning is adjusting to Tokelau tradition. The old ways. The Island has been ruled by the Council of Elders. By the old men.
Change has come slowly. It's only recently that women have been allowed to be present at the Councils Fono.'
What if the Tokelauan tradition of ruling could be adapted to include other age groups?

'The elders told us - 'he mafua ma Tokelau'- 'Go away catch the fish and bring it back'. We left, caught the fish - but many of us have never returned. Especially my lot - my generation.'
What if the missing generation (people aged 30-60 years old) all returned now?

'Our population has shrunk from two thousand to less than 1500. Nearly 50% of the population is under 15.'
What if a way is not found to keep the young people?

'
One of the blessings of Tokelau, is that if you know how, you can live off the atoll or the lagoon.'

What if Tokelau becomes Westernised and people don't know how to live off the atoll or the lagoon?
