Te Faka Tokelau
- Ask the students to refer back to the Jigsaw activity when they each collected a completed jigsaw of one of the key people - Ioane, Hegalo, Puka, Tolise or
Falima.
- Organise the class into groups of five making sure that each group contains a student representing each of the five key people.
- If class numbers are not divisible by five, students may have to change roles; or groups may include two of one person; or Ioane (who will chair the group) may be left out.
- Each group will need a copy of the Soundbites and access to the summary
Bubble
Maps/Structured Overviews of what has changed and what has remained the same in Tokelauan culture and society.
- They will also need access to Photo File 1
- either online or in hard copy.
What is Te Faka Tokelau: The Tokelauan Way?
(a) Provide each person with a copy of the
Personal Perception (PP) Map
(b) In their groups the students discuss what it is that each of the key people considers as "being Tokelauan" or Te
Faka Tokelau: the Tokelauan Way.
(c) The group completes PP Maps for Hegalo, Puka, Tolise and Falima. Each PP Map will include:
- The person's name and/or photograph
- His/her definition of Te Faka Tokelau
- Two Soundbites that illustrate his/her understanding of Te
Faka Tokelau
- Two images (from the video) illustrating an aspect of Te
Faka Tokelau
- Reasons why s/he wants to keep aspects of Te Faka Tokelau.
(d) Ioane prepares a visual summary, using a graphic
organiser, of the group's findings to present to the class. In the absence of an Ioane, the group can work together to produce a summary.
