Reporting
Each year, the board's annual report describes the school's progress to the school community.
It describes the significant activities that the board, staff, and students planned and undertook during the year.

The annual report provides an opportunity to celebrate successes and to evaluate plans and targets.
In the report you will be able to show the extent to which your activities have made a difference
to student achievement.
The legislation requires the board to provide a brief evaluation of the school's progress towards its planned targets.
The annual report will also provide an evaluation of the on-going programme of curriculum implementation.
This evaluation will not only provide assurance that the school is continuing to meet all of its
responsibilities, it will also inform decisions about future strategic improvement goals and targets
As part of the annual report the board should provide a brief account of staff development and property
management activities. In the related financial report, it will show how the activities reported here were funded.
If the school has applied for, and received, additional resourcing to implement a particular part of
its school development programme, the report should briefly describe the programmes that were put in
place and the board's evaluation of the resulting impact on student outcomes. If the conditions of the
grant required a special report, then a copy of this is all that is required.
The easiest way to prepare the annual report is with direct reference to the goals, targets,
and planned activities described in the school's charter.
A copy of the board's annual report is to be lodged with the Ministry of Education.
The following questions will help you report with reference to your annual planning and targets for improvement:
|
Were all the programmes that you planned implemented? What happened?
If you received extra resourcing for special programmes, what did the students in those programmes achieve?
Did your new programmes make any difference to expected student outcomes?
Did the students achieve better than before because of your initiatives?
How will you describe your progress towards your targets?
Having evaluated your progress towards the annual targets, what do you intend to do next?
How do you intend to provide this information to your community? What steps will you take to ensure this information is readily understood by your community?
|
As your report needs to provide a commentary on the variance between the targets you set and
what was achieved in the last year, a simple tabular form may be useful. (In some circumstances
schools may decide that it unwise to publicise the historical data that lead to the setting of
the improvement target.)

Strategic Goal: Improve reading skills
for year 4 students

Historical position

Our target

Our result
|
Discussion
|
|
60% of year 4 read below their chronological age
|
At least 60% of year 4s reading at or above their chronological age
|
53% of year 4s now reading at or above their chronological age. 10% are reading at least 3 years above.
|
A significant step up. The major impediment to further improvement seems to be in
encouraging wider reading at home. In the new year we intend to adopt a home-school
relationship programme to encourage more reading out of school.

|
Only 35% of year 11 geography students reach NQF
level standard in "natural events"
|
At least 55% of year 11 geography students reach
NQF level standard in "natural events" this year
|
75% of year 11 geography students reached NQF
level in "natural events" this year
|
An excellent result. The geography department will mainstream the resources they used
last year, and will concentrate on human geography this year.
