This material was produced by the Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ) under contract to the Ministry of Education in 2000 and 2001. It was written to assist teachers and schools in their delivery of the technology/ hangarau curriculum statements. The project was jointly coordinated by personnel from the Technology Education New Zealand (TENZ) and National Association of Māori Mathematicians, Scientists and Technologists (NAMMSAT) networks. Monitoring and evaluation of the material was carried out by a national project advisory group.

Overview

This is a certificate course for those teachers who are or aspire to be, the Resource Teacher Technology in their school. The Certificate in Technology Education comprises four 50 hour papers, with two being offered in each Semester.

Semester Two (July – November 2000)

HA569 – Fields of Technological Practice and the Classroom
This course is aimed at teachers of levels 1 to 5 who wish to gain further understanding of technological fields of practice in industry and business and their relationship to technological practice in the classroom. Teachers will be assisted to up-skill themselves in technological areas with which they are unfamiliar and given the opportunity to make resources relevant to a chosen technological area. Course members will gain confidence in developing units of work in a range of technological areas and at more than one level.

HA663 – Teaching Technology: Linking Theory with Classroom Practice
This course is aimed at teachers of levels 1 to 5 who would like to understand the theoretical background and motivation for the continued implementation of quality programmes in technology education and how this impacts on what they are doing in the classroom. This course seeks to inform participants of the aspects which make technology education unique and should contribute to the development of a sound technology education programme within a primary classroom.

Semester One (February – June 2001)

HA627 – Leadership in Technology Education (Distance Education Course)
This course is designed to provide primary, intermediate and secondary teachers with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of technology education as reflected in The New Zealand Curriculum Framework. The emphasis on school development means that this course is also able to be credited towards the Diploma in IT Ed as an optional paper and the proposed Certificate in Technology Information.

HA570 – Teaching Technology Together: Co-operative Technology Programmes for Classroom and Specialist Teachers
This paper is designed to encourage both classroom and specialist teachers to jointly plan and teach programmes of work at all levels of primary education. It will focus on the development of cooperative teaching practices by promoting an understanding of the processes employed by both groups in the delivery of technology education and will encourage teachers to draw on each others expertise when developing their own technology programme.

Fees

$355 per paper

Note: It is usual for teachers to take one paper per semester but some may wish to complete the Certificate of Technology Education in one year by taking two papers per semester.
