The iced-biscuit production line: learning about inputs, outputs, and sequence
In order to reinforce the student's understandings of the production line and develop their skills using a different medium, the students made an iced-biscuit production line. Emphasis was placed on developing a quality outcome, designing a production sequence, and group cooperation skills and distinguishing between inputs, outputs and processes in the production line.
In groups of four, students worked in the production line to ice four plain biscuits. Each student was assigned a specific task – icing the biscuit or placing the mouth, nose, or eyes. They decided the order in which they would work and then completed the first biscuit.
William was able to design a flowchart for the production-line sequence to make an iced biscuit face.
This became the manufacturing sequence that was used by William's group to manufacture biscuits of a consistent quality to that achieved with the first biscuit.
