Visiting a shoe factory: learning about inputs, outputs, and sequence
The students visited a local shoe factory to see the sequence of actions in a production line. Teacher preparation for the visit was important to ensure that the students focused on the production system and not on peripheral aspects.
While they were there, the teacher reinforced the concepts of inputs (materials to make the shoes), processes (using the materials), and outputs (the finished shoes) by asking the students to look out for these. The teacher took photographs of each of the main stages in the production process.
When they returned to the classroom, the students were given copies of the photographs and asked to order them in a sequence that represented the process they had observed.
They were then asked to identify the inputs, processes, and outputs. This assessment linked to the first gateway. William ordered the photographs in the correct sequence and explained them accurately, identifying inputs, processes, and outputs.
