Designing a production line
The next step was to design a production line to make a class card, according to the specifications of the brief.
The second gateway focused on students' understandings of production systems. During this phase they had the opportunity to design a production-line sequence and to describe the steps involved in making a card. The students were able to use the knowledge gained from developing their own cards to help them to develop a production sequence.
When this was completed, students were allocated a specific task within the sequence, depending on the skills they had demonstrated when obtaining their Production and Process licences.
At this stage, the teacher realised that the students needed an opportunity to demonstrate their individual abilities to carry out a key activity as part of a production-line team manufacturing products to an agreed quality. To manage this, the teacher negotiated a third gateway to assess whether the students could play an active role in a production line to manufacture products to an agreed quality.
William did so and successfully completed his task of stamping.
The cards were manufactured to the agreed quality and presented to the teacher aides at the end of school year.
