My family is really important to me so I wanted to ask you how important is whānau to you and your music?

I'm Ngati Kahungunu and Ngai Tuhoe on my dad's side. I always have lots of aroha and support from all my whanau.

What was your childhood like? And how does this show in your music?

My whanau is my priority in life. I wrote my first album inspired by my daughter Hineraukatauri.

What made you decide to be a singer and songwriter?

I grew up on a farm in Central Hawkes Bay. We always worked hard together as a family unit which has set me in good stead for my music and working careers.

Apart from singing and writing songs, what do you like to do?

I have always loved to sing and perform. I went to St Josephs Māori Girls College which first encouraged me down the entertainment track.

How did you form your band?
From Matiu

I don't actually have a band; I worked instead with a producer Jaz Coleman who brought session musicians together for the recording of my music.

At what age did you start playing music and what did you play?
From Jane

I can't play any musical instruments. I just hear a tune in my head and sing it to musicians who arrange the music.

How does it make you feel to know that people admire and look up to you for your musical talent?

I'm very humbled by those who enjoy my music and show their appreciation. It feels good to have a positive impact on others.

Touring is hard work and very unglamorous. It is the side of music I am least available for due to family commitments.

What do you think when you read reviews of your music?

Some reviews are good, some less so. I prefer to have anecdotal reviews from people I meet rather than newspaper or magazine reviews.

I was wondering where you would like to take your music in the future.

It is most rewarding to take Māori music to the world stage. My greatest critics are my own whanau. I value their opinion the most.
