Dancing with masks

A lot of African dances copy the way animals move. To help the dancers look more animal-like they wear a mask and move their feet and head in ways an animal would.

  1. Look at the different animal masks on this website
    • Click on the video link to see them being used in dance.
    • Make an African mask by following the instructions on the site.
  2. Make your own dance and mask for a New Zealand bird by looking at the interactive called Te wānanga o ngā manu

Send a video or digital photos of your dance and mask to ed@tki.org.nz

Dancing myths

Many dances from around the world tell stories. Kapa haka can tell stories like an iwi making a journey, myths, and even day-to-day life.

  1. Read some of these Māori myths
  2. Choose a myth you would like to tell through dance and create your own dance to tell the story.
  3. See this link for ideas on Kapa haka, or if you would like to be daring, you could use a different dance style such as hip-hop or jazz to tell your myth.
    • For help with the different stages of dance see the Sāsā Maxi activity.

Video your performance of your myth and send it to wiki@wicked.org.nz
