Dancing with masks
A lot of African dances copy the way animals move. To help the dancers look more animal-like they wear a mask and move their feet and head in ways an animal would.
- Look at the different animal masks on this website
- Click on the video link to see them being used in dance.
- Make an African mask by following the instructions on the site.
- Make your own dance and mask for a New Zealand bird by looking at the interactive called Te wānanga o ngā manu
Send a video or digital photos of your dance and mask to ed@tki.org.nz

Dancing myths
Many dances from around the world tell stories. Kapa haka can tell stories like an iwi making a journey, myths, and even day-to-day life.
- Read some of these Māori myths
- Choose a myth you would like to tell through dance and create your own dance to tell the story.
- See this link for ideas on Kapa haka, or
if you would like to be daring, you could use a different dance style such as hip-hop or jazz to tell your myth.
- For help with the different stages of dance see the Sāsā Maxi activity.
Video your performance of your myth and send it to wiki@wicked.org.nz
