Skilful siapo

Siapo, sometimes called tapa cloth, is a traditional Pasifika cloth made from the bark of the mulberry tree. It is often used in ceremonies and special occasions. Tipani wants to teach Ed and Wiki how to make siapo.

  1. Open the siapo instructions document, and save it into your work folder.
  2. Open the siapo making website and watch the video on how siapo is made and decorated.
  3. Write a set of simple instructions on how to make siapo.
  4. Design a traditional siapo pattern in a Paint program. Look at Siapo.com for ideas.

Email your tapa cloth and instructions to ed@tki.org.nz

  1. Open the boardgame and save it to your work folder.
  2. Check out these websites to find information about navigating and sailing in traditional canoes to put onto your game.

Pasifika festival

Tipani went to the Auckland Pasifika festival earlier this year and had such an awesome time she can't wait for the one in 2004. Your job is to create a brochure promoting the event.

  1. Connect to the Pasifika Festival website and read through the events and information.
  2. Create an informative, eyecatching brochure. It must include:
    • a logo for the festival with a Pasifika flavour. Look at the Pasifika Festival logos for ideas,
    • greetings in different Pacific nation language,
    • an explanation of the purpose of the festival,
    • a short description promoting the Pacific Underground.

Email your festival brochure to ed@tki.org.nz

Patterns over time

Traditional Pasifika art forms provide inspiration for contemporary artists who like to highlight the culture and heritage of Pasifika while using modern media.

  1. Look at Kava: An exhibition by Sione Francis and view the slide show where artist Sione Francis explains his theme of past and present
  2. Read about four more contemporary artists and look at their artwork carefully.
  3. Write a review for your local paper. Comment on:
    • how the past has been reflected in their works – the materials they have used
    • images they are trying to create
    • modern issues that indigenous Pasifika peoples face.

Email your review to ed@tki.org.nz
