Using digital technologies to support Māori learners

This new guide provides information and examples demonstrating how you can use digital technologies to support Māori learners in your classroom.

National Standards removed

The Government has announced that National Standards and Ngā Whanaketanga Rumaki Māori will be removed from 2018.

This change will better acknowledge the different ways and pace at which children learn, and support teachers to provide more learning opportunities based on what children already know and can do.

Schools and kura will still be required to report to parents, at least twice a year, on their child’s progress and achievement, especially in the foundational learning areas of maths, reading, and writing. But schools and kura will no longer be required to use National Standards and Ngā Whanaketanga Rumaki Māori for this reporting.

Find out more about these changes and about the new reporting requirements.

Teaching approaches and strategies that work

This new report from the Education Review Office explores specific strategies that schools have used to improve achievement.

New: Teaching for Positive Behaviour resource

A new resource, Teaching for Positive Behaviour, has been written for teachers in all New Zealand schools and kura to help them support the behaviour, engagement, participation and learning of children and young people.

Each section has a range of strategies for teachers to use along with an example of effective practice. The resource also includes activities designed to support staff professional learning and development, links to further information, and a self-assessment tool.
